Vallejo is the strongest case in this county for ornamental ironwork and simultaneously the hardest place to keep it. The Heritage District's Working Man's Victorians from 1860 to 1890 and St. Vincent's houses from 1890 to 1915 call for genuine period detail, and in the Old City Historic District that design is reviewed. In districts like these the design itself is reviewed, not just the height. We draw to that standard from the start so the submittal clears rather than cycling through corrections.
It depends almost entirely on the finish system. Plain powder coated scrollwork near the strait can show rust bleed within a few years, because the coating is only a barrier and the crevices in ornamental work are where it gets breached first. Galvanized underneath and powder coated over the top, it lasts dramatically longer.
